Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
Alhamdulillahi wassalatu wassalamu ala sayyidina rasulillah wa ‘ala aalihi wa sahbihi wa man walah.
Alhamdulillah, today we continue our study of Surah Al-An’am.
Yesterday, we took a brief overview of the Makki Surahs and the order of the Qur’an.
Recap: The Divine Structure of Makki Surahs
If we look at the arrangement of the Qur’an, we see a divine order in the placement of Makki and Madani Surahs.
• Al-Fatiha is Makki, but after that, from Al-Baqarah to Al-Ma’idah, we find Madani Surahs.
• Then comes Surah Al-An’am and Surah Al-A’raf—both Makki Surahs.
• Then again, Surah Al-Anfal and Surah At-Tawbah are Madani.
This alternating pattern is not random—it is divinely structured.
Six Groups of Makki Surahs
If we look at all the Makki Surahs, we find that they fall into six major groups.
• If we divide them into pairs, we notice that they cover the entire concept of Islamic Aqidah.
1️⃣ Group 1 & 2 → Proving the Truthfulness of Prophethood
• Before anything else, we need to establish that Rasulullah ﷺ is the true messenger.
• This is why Surah Al-An’am and Surah Al-A’raf focus on Nubuwwah (Prophethood).
2️⃣ Group 3 & 4 → Tawheed (Oneness of Allah)
• These surahs focus on Ilahiyat (Theology)—the existence and oneness of Allah.
• They highlight Allah’s favours—creation, sustenance, blessings in nature, etc.
3️⃣ Group 5 & 6 → Akhirah (Afterlife, Jannah & Jahannam)
• The last two groups focus on Sam’iyyat (Unseen matters)—Jannah, Jahannam, resurrection, and accountability.
• These themes dominate Juz 29 & 30, which many of us have memorised.
This shows that the Qur’an is systematically building our faith.
1️⃣ First, we need to trust the Prophet ﷺ.
2️⃣ Then, we understand Tawheed and Allah’s favours.
3️⃣ Finally, we are reminded of our accountability in the afterlife.
Tafsir of Surah Al-An’am – Ayah 1
“Alhamdulillahilladhi khalaqas-samawati wal-ard wa ja’ala az-zulumati wannur”
“All praise is due to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth, and made darkness and light.”
🔹 Second Surah to Begin with Alhamdulillah
This is the second surah in the Qur’an that begins with Alhamdulillah.
• Surah Al-Fatiha → General gratitude for everything
• Surah Al-An’am → Gratitude for guidance & the truthfulness of Rasulullah ﷺ
Just as Allah created light and darkness, He sent Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to distinguish between truth and falsehood.
