Welcome to day 8 of "Be Quranic," where we take short passages from the Quran, extract practical lessons, and apply them to our daily lives so we can be more Quranic.
Insha'Allah, today we continue our study of Suratul Fatiha, focusing on the fourth ayah, "Malikiyaumiddin." This ayah reminds us of the inevitability of death and that life extends beyond it, where we'll face accountability for our actions. This concept, recited at least 17 times a day, serves as a meditation on death, echoing Rasulullah (saw)'s wisdom that a smart person often remembers death and prepares for life after it. This approach to life prioritises our daily actions, a practice exemplified by many scholars through their morning recitation of Surah Yaseen.
This belief in Akhira (afterlife) gives deeper meaning to our lives, assuring us of ultimate justice. It reminds us that the consequences of actions, whether good or bad, may not be fully realized in this world. This perspective is crucial when considering the actions of figures so evil like George Bush and Benjamin Netanyahu, under whose leadership millions of people have died and many more suffered. Their earthly judgments, or lack thereof, underscore the importance of Akhira, where ultimate justice prevails beyond the limitations of human judgment.
Today, we are encouraged to start our day, especially this Monday, with Akhira in mind. This means evaluating our actions not just for their worldly outcomes but for their eternal significance. Serving humanity, for instance, becomes an act of Ibadah (worship). To transform everyday actions into acts of worship, they must be conducted with the right intention, be halal, comply with religious rules, have a beneficial outcome, and not neglect foundational acts of worship. A simple act like eating, when done with the intention of nourishing the body for Allah's service, using halal food, in a halal manner, leading to a good outcome without interfering with basic worship practices, can be an act of worship. Applying these principles, we strive to live a life attuned to the Akhira, making every action count towards an act of worship. That’s our quest for today.
